When the words “I am broken” finally fall out of someone’s mouth they have usually hit the absolute bottom.
It happens after the phone call from the doctor. After a funeral. After the door closes on a relationship you thought would last forever, or when a lifelong dream quietly slips through your fingers.
It is the feeling of looking down at your life and realizing you don’t have enough glue, or energy, to fix it.
Let’s be very honest: in the human experience, it hurts. The grief, the sickness, the loss….it feels intensely, breath-takingly real.
What ACIM does is putting a warm hand on your shoulder and say: Yes, the circumstances are shattered. Yes, the human heart aches. But YOU? You cannot be broken.
To understand this without getting tangled in heavy spiritual frameworks, imagine you are a bright beam of sunlight hitting a beautiful, antique mirror.
One day, the mirror falls off the wall and shatters into a thousand pieces on the floor.
The reflection is fractured.
The mirror is completely, undeniably broken.
But what happened to the sunlight? ….Absolutely nothing!
The light did not break. The light cannot be cut by the glass, nor can it be damaged by the fall. It remains exactly as whole and luminous as it was before.
In ACIM, your life situation, your physical body, your career, and even your emotional state are the mirror. They are fragile. They change, they age, and sometimes, they break. But you….your true Awareness, the quiet Observer behind the eyes…..are the Light.
When we say, “I am broken,” we are simply confusing our identity. We are identifying with the shattered mirror instead of the untouched Light
This radical difference between the fragile world and our indestructible true nature is the very foundation of the Course. It is why the book opens with its most famous, grounding summary:
“Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God.”
If it can be broken, lost, or made sick, it belongs to the temporary world of form (the unreal). But your core essence….the Love and Awareness that you actually are…..is entirely real, and therefore, it cannot be threatened by anything that happens on this earthly stage.
Another incredibly comforting quote from the Course is found in
Lesson 110: “I am as God created me.”
It does not say, “I am as my trauma shaped me.”
It doesn’t say, “I am as my illness defined me,” or “I am as my divorce left me.”
It states that your spiritual DNA is absolutely immune to the bumps, scratches, and tragedies of the human dream.
Why is it sometimes so difficult to remember this when we are hurting?
Because when pain becomes very deep, the mind naturally starts building an identity around it. Not because we are weak, and not because we are doing something wrong, but because human beings try to make sense of suffering.
Over time, sadness can begin to feel like who we are instead of something we are experiencing. A Course in Miracles reminds us that although painful experiences can deeply affect our human story, they do not have the power to change what we truly are.
Beneath every frightened thought and every shattered self-image, something remains quietly untouched.
True healing, according to this perspective, is not about putting the pieces of your life back together so you look “normal” again. Sometimes, the pieces simply won’t fit anymore. And that is okay.
Healing is the quiet, stunning realization that you don’t need the mirror to be whole. You can stand right in the middle of a messy, unpredictable human life, feeling the very real sadness of a loss or the frustration of a sick body, and still know your absolute safety. You can look at the scattered pieces on the floor, take a deep breath, and whisper:
My circumstances may be shattered. My heart may be grieving. But the Light in me remains untouched.
With love and light
