Last night, around eight o’clock, we went outside for our usual evening walk. But this evening was different. We had been prepared by newspapers and television for the eclipse, and apparently half the neighborhood had received the same invitation from the sky.
The sunlight was extraordinary. Sharp, almost completely white, somehow different from the familiar warm evening light. You could hardly look toward it.
But what fascinated me even more than the sky were the
people……….They were everywhere!
People had brought chairs and were sitting together. Some wore those funny eclipse glasses. Others had telescopes with a special filter pointed toward the sun. Almost everyone had a phone in their hand. People were talking, laughing, calling things out to each other.
And something very simple began to happen: strangers shared….someone offered us their eclipse glasses: Here, have a look.
…the man with a large telescope had almost become a cheerful market vendor, inviting one person after another to look through it.
Nobody seemed to care who was standing next to whom.
People smiled at strangers. They made room for each other.
They shared what they had..
I think unity happens because it is not something we have to create. It is what becomes visible when, for a moment, we forget all the reasons we invented for keeping our distance from one another.
And yesterday evening, the universe provided one, and hundreds of separate lives looked in the same direction.
The eclipse was spectacular but the most spectacular thing wasn’t happening above us……It was happening between us!
With love and light,
Gonny
