People often say, “He lost his life.”

I’ve always found that expression fascinating. Did he really lose life?

Or did the body simply stop expressing it?

Perhaps we have been looking at life from the wrong direction.

From the moment we are born, we are taught that life belongs to us. My life. Your life. Their life. As if life were something we own for a little while until one day it is taken away again.

But what if it is the other way around?

What if you don’t have a life…What if you are Life?

Or perhaps even more accurately: Life is living itself as you…for a little while.

The body is temporary. Your name is temporary. Your personality changes throughout your lifetime. Even your beliefs come and go.

Yet something has been present through every moment of your life. It was there before your first memory. It is here while you read these words. It has witnessed every joy, every fear, every success, every disappointment.

Everything changes.

Yet something never seems to leave.

Many scientists and philosophers have wondered whether consciousness is more fundamental than matter. Federico Faggin, the physicist and inventor of the microprocessor, suggests that consciousness is not something the brain produces, but something fundamental to reality itself. From this perspective, every living being is a temporary expression through which consciousness experiences life.

Whether or not one agrees with that view, it invites a remarkable possibility.

Perhaps the body does not create Life.

Perhaps Life temporarily expresses itself as a body.

If that is true, then birth is not the beginning of Life.

Death is not the end of Life.

They are simply moments in the appearance and disappearance of one particular form. Like a wave rising from the ocean and eventually settling back into it.

Has the ocean disappeared? Or only the wave?

Most of us, however, spend very little time wondering about Life itself.

Instead, we spend years constructing a story about who we are.

“I am successful…I am a failure….I am spiritual…..I am not good enough…

I am my past…..I am my body…..I am what others think of me.”

Thought after thought, the mind keeps telling itself who we are. Eventually we become so familiar with the story that we mistake it for ourselves.

But then another question quietly appears…(perhaps an even more important one than “What is Life?”)……Who is asking the question?

Before the mind rushes to answer, simply pause.

Notice. A thought appears. Another thought follows. Then another.

Even the thought that says, “I am asking this question,” appears.

But to whom do these thoughts appear? Who notices them?

Can the one who is aware be another thought?

Or has awareness always been here, silently witnessing every thought that comes and goes?

Perhaps this is where real discovery begins. Not by collecting better answers. But by becoming curious about the one who is searching.

Thought is a wonderful instrument.

It allows us to build cities, write music, understand mathematics and explore the universe. But thought can never fully explain the one who is aware of thought.

A map is not the landscape.

The word ‘water’ cannot quench your thirst.

And the story you tell yourself about who you are can never be the living reality itself.

Maybe that is why so many spiritual traditions invite us, in different ways, to become still. Not to stop thinking forever. But to discover that there is something present before the next thought appears.

A quiet aliveness. An effortless awareness. A presence that does not need to become anything because it already is.

Perhaps awakening is far simpler than we imagine. Not becoming someone new, reaching a higher state or collecting more spiritual knowledge. But stepping out of the endless narration in our head and noticing what has never left.

Then the question, “Who am I?” slowly begins to dissolve.

Not because it has been answered, but because the one who believed it was only the story has begun to awaken from the story itself.

Maybe we have spent our whole lives trying to find Life…..while Life has been living as us all along.

With love and light,

Gonny
