Today we use the word “truth” for almost everything.
“This is my truth.”
“Everyone has their own truth.”
But if we pause for a moment, something interesting becomes clear.
Is blue the most beautiful color? Some people would say yes. Others would choose red, green, yellow, or purple.
Who is right?……….No one !
Not because every answer is true, but because none of them is the truth. They are preferences, opinions, and beliefs.
Truth is something entirely different. Truth cannot be true for one person and false for another. It does not change when someone disagrees with it. It does not depend on culture, education, time, or personal experience.
A Course in Miracles makes a remarkable distinction. It says that truth is that which never changes. Anything that can change, disappear, or be replaced by another opinion belongs to the world of perception, not to the world of truth.
Think about it.
“I am 71 years old.” That may be factually correct today, but it wasn’t true twenty years ago, and it won’t be true a hundred years from now. It is a temporary fact, not eternal truth.
“I am happy.” That may be true this morning and not this evening.
“I am this body.” The body changes every moment and will eventually disappear.
According to A Course in Miracles, the only truth is what remains forever unchanged.
‘Love is’…..’Oneness is’….and ‘you are exactly as God created you : whole, innocent, and forever complete’ is.
Science approaches this from a different direction. Rather than beginning with God, Federico Faggin f.e. argues that consciousness is fundamental. It is not produced by the brain or by matter. Our deepest identity is not the body or the personality, but consciousness itself. Although the language differs, both perspectives point toward something that never changes.
Perhaps truth can be described very simply:
Truth is that which is always true…for everyone, at every moment, without exception.
The moment something depends on time, circumstances, memory, opinion, or personal preference, we have left the realm of truth and entered the realm of interpretation.
That is a radical idea. Because it means that almost everything we argue about is not really truth at all.
It is simply different interpretations of the same dream.
Perhaps the most important question we can ask ourselves is this:
Am I speaking about truth, or merely expressing a belief?
That question alone can change a conversation… and sometimes, a life.
