Imagine you’re walking through your living room and stub your toe on the same chair for the third time this week. You shout something unholy, glare at the chair, and think, “I should have moved it!”
That’s what the ego does every single day…it keeps bumping into the same memories, the same judgments, the same inner furniture that hasn’t really been there for years.
Today’s ACIM lesson 289 says it with divine simplicity:
“The past is over. It can touch me not.”
But the mind insists, “Are you sure? Because it felt very real when it happened.”
The Holy Spirit smiles and whispers, “Yes, but it isn’t happening now.”
And that little sentence is the key to freedom.
When we look with the Holy Spirit instead of the ego, we start to see that what we call “our story” is nothing more than a replay…a spiritual rerun on the channel of guilt. The same characters, the same emotions, the same commercial breaks for blame and self-defense. No wonder we feel tired!
Forgiveness, then, is simply changing the channel.
The Holy Spirit is not a distant, glowing dove hovering somewhere above the clouds. He is that quiet presence in the mind that gently says, “You could look at this differently.”
He never judges, never blames, never shouts, “I told you so.” He just offers you a fresh moment…a brand-new now…where nothing from the past has any meaning.
Think of it like updating the operating system of your computer, but now do it in your mind….
The ego runs on PastOperating System ….full of glitches, viruses, and old files named Regret (final version 47…
).
The Holy Spirit offers LoveOS, where every moment starts clean and the only app running is Peace.
When you hand Him the past, you’re not losing anything real. You’re deleting an illusion. You’re saying, “I no longer need this heavy archive of pain.”
And the funny thing is…the moment you stop defending your old wounds, you discover they were never wounds at all, just echoes of a dream.
In that quiet instant of release, the world begins to look softer.
People seem kinder, not because they changed, but because your vision did.
This is the “world forgiveness offers” …a world free of history, free of judgment, free of the need to be right.
So if today the mind brings up an old story, that one argument, that lost chance, that disappointment …smile and say:
“Ah, rerun detected. Let’s stream the present instead.”
Then pause, breathe, and let the Holy Spirit show you what’s actually here:
nothing to fix, nothing to fear, nothing to forgive…only Love remembering Itself.
And that, dear friends, is what it means to be free of the past.
