Most of us have talked to God at some point in our lives. Sometimes we do it when life feels difficult, sometimes when we are filled with gratitude, and sometimes while circling a crowded parking lot hoping Heaven might help us find a space.
Yet students of A Course in Miracles eventually encounter an idea that can sound surprising at first: God does not know this world.
That may seem unsettling. If God does not know the world, does He know about our struggles, our fears, our losses, and our prayers?
According to the Course, God is perfect Love and perfect Reality. He knows only what is eternal, whole, and true. He does not know separation because separation never truly happened. If God knew the world of fear, conflict, and suffering as real, He would be making it real.
Imagine a child having a nightmare about a monster under the bed. A loving mother does not jump into the dream to fight the monster. Instead, she gently wakes the child and reminds him that he is safe. In the same way, God does not see the monsters in our dream. He knows only His beloved Son, forever safe at Home.
So who hears us when we pray?
The Course answers: the Holy Spirit. You may call it your Higher Self, the Voice for Love, or the quiet Presence within. The Holy Spirit remembers Reality completely while understanding the dream we believe we are experiencing.
When we say, “I am afraid,” the Holy Spirit hears a call for love. When we say, “I am lost,” He reminds us of what can never be lost. He does not judge our fears or our struggles. He gently translates them into opportunities for healing.
This is why we can bring everything to Him, from life’s greatest sorrows to its smallest frustrations. Not because our problems are ultimately real, but because our experience of them feels real to us.
So keep talking. Keep praying. Keep asking for help.
You have not been abandoned in the dream. You have been given a Guide who gently leads you toward the remembrance that you never truly left Home.
With love and light,
G.
