In the simplest words: Awareness is that in which everything appears.
It is the Light by which you can see… that you think, that you feel, that you perceive.
It is not something you have… it is what you are, before every feeling, before every thought.
You can also say it like this:
Everything you can name : body, thoughts, emotions, experiences…comes and goes.
Awareness is that which never comes and never goes.
It is the quiet background that is always present… even when you sleep, dream, or get lost in your thoughts.
Is Awareness a kind of energy? No , not if we want to be accurate.
Energy has form, movement, and change.
Energy can be maesured, can grow stronger or weaker, has direction, and shifts between states…….Awareness does none of this!
It does not change…It does not move…itnever becomes more or less.
It has no beginning, no ending, no direction.
You could say:
Energy appears within Awareness, just as clouds appear in the sky, but the sky is not a cloud.
The Course never calls Awareness “energy.”
It calls it Mind, Spirit, the Christ, Light.
And it always points out that this Light is perfect, cannot be limited, cannot be divided, cannot be improved, because It has no form, yet It is the Source in which all forms seem to appear.
……..
A simple example: Imagine a cinema.
On the screen you see energy, action, drama, music, movement.
Everything is constantly changing.
But what never changes? : The white screen.
The screen itself is not energy.
It is the silent surface on which all energy can dance.
Awareness is that screen. And you are that screen…..not the movie playing on it !
The Course would say it like this:
You are not a “thing” that contains energy; you are the Light by which energy is seen.
You are not the wave, but the ocean.
Not the figure in the draem, but that in which the dream appears.
A wave does not need to fight for survival when it remembers: I am the ocean.
………
Awareness does not move…
Just as the screen is always the screen, and the Light remains the Light,
unchanged and untouched by anything that plays upon it.
But still… it seems as if something happened.
How?
Here comes the beauty: the very heart of A Course in Miracles:
Awareness never truly moved. But it seemed as if something occurred.
The Course calls this:”A tiny, mad idea… at which the Son of God forgot to laugh.”
A little idea. Not a deed. Not an event. Not an action. Not a movement.
A thought flickered, and that flicker became the entire universe of time and space. Not because Awareness did anything real…, but because it is possible to imagine something without making it true.
……….
Think of a child looking into a mirror
The child sees itself and for one second thinks:
“Is that someone else?”
The child does not become two.
Nothing happens to the child.
But the idea appears for a moment.
Awareness / the Son of God is infinitely creative.
So that one-second confusion became an entire dream world in which it seemed as if there was an “other.”
Not because Awareness acted, but because Awareness can imagine.
…….
The dream moves, but Awareness stays still
Just like: reflections move, but the mirror stays still; the movie moves, but the screen is untouched; the clouds dance, but the sky remains unchanged.
That is why the Course never says: “Awareness separated Itself.”
It says: There seemed to be a thought of separation… but nothing happened in Reality.
Where does the “movement” come from?…..From imagination !
From an illusion so convincing that the character (the ego) disappeared into it. But an illusion is not energy in the sense of real power.
It is a projection or, in the language of ACIM: an attempt to make the impossible look possible.
And so: Awareness never changed…never became smaller…and was never divided. All movement is apparent movement, the effect of an idea that never truly took place.
So…
Awareness never made a real movement.
The “separation” was not an event, but a thought.
The entire world is the story of that thought.
Not because Awareness actually split,
but because Awareness has the capacity to imagine
….even what is impossible. And that is what we call dreaming.
With love and light,
G.
