In the world of spirituality, we often come across the terms ‘Awareness’ and ‘Consciousness.’ But what do these words actually mean, and how do they fit within the principles of A Course in Miracles (ACIM)? Let’s take a lighthearted look at this.
Consciousness: The Thinking Machine
Imagine that your consciousness is like a hamster on a wheel. It runs and runs, full of enthusiasm, convinced that it’s getting somewhere. But what it doesn’t realize is that the wheel never really moves forward. Just like this hamster, our consciousness often goes in circles, caught in thoughts, judgments, and ideas about who we think we are.
According to ACIM, Consciousness is the realm of duality. It is that part of us that thinks in terms of ‘me’ and ‘the other,’ of right and wrong, of past and future. It’s constantly being tossed between love and fear, always seeking meaning in the illusion of the world. Consciousness is like that curious hamster, thinking that if it just runs hard enough, it will eventually understand what’s going on.
Awareness: The Silent Observer
Awareness, on the other hand, is like the gentle smile of the hamster’s owner, who knows that the little creature can keep running, but that the wheel isn’t going anywhere. Awareness is the quiet, loving presence that is aware of everything without being caught up in it. It does not judge, it does not analyze, it simply observes.
In the world of ACIM, Awareness is the state of simply “being.” It is the eternal connection with God, where there is no distinction between ‘me’ and ‘the other.’ Awareness lovingly watches consciousness run around and softly whispers: “It’s okay, you don’t have to go anywhere.”
Let’s be honest: we’ve all been that hamster at one point, haven’t we? We try to understand life by constantly thinking and analyzing, but how often do we really get anywhere? When you stop running and just stay still for a moment, you realize you’re already where you want to be—in the Now, in the Awareness of who you truly are.
ACIM teaches us that consciousness is always busy trying to understand what is, in fact, incomprehensible: the illusion of separation. But Awareness invites us to simply observe, without judgment. And in that observation lies peace, the peace of God.
So, next time you catch yourself in that endless cycle of thinking—whether you’re worrying about what to eat for dinner or about the meaning of life—remind yourself: you are not the hamster. You are the smiling observer, lovingly watching the whole scene unfold.
