Let’s be honest—prayer has evolved a lot over the centuries, right? I mean, who hasn’t tried the “bargain with God” prayer at least once? You know the one: “Dear God, if you just get me out of this mess, I promise I’ll never do that thing again!” (Spoiler alert: you probably did the thing again.)
Then there’s the shopping list prayer, where you treat God like some sort of cosmic Amazon: “God, I need a raise, a better house, and oh, can you fix my neighbor’s dog while you’re at it?”
And, of course, we have the dramatic performance prayer. You know the one—you’re on your knees, hands clasped, with the world’s most pained expression on your face, thinking: “I’m really nailing this whole saintly look. Surely God’s impressed!”
But The Song of Prayer from A Course in Miracles teaches us that prayer isn’t about negotiating, begging, or perfecting our Academy Award-winning spiritual performance. Nope, prayer is actually much simpler (and way more peaceful). True prayer is about uniting with God—feeling His presence, connecting with that unshakable peace within, and letting go of all the drama we’ve wrapped around it. No long shopping lists required!
When we pray, it’s not about asking for things we think we need in this illusionary world—it’s about remembering that we already have everything we need in our connection with God. It’s like going from thinking you’re running on empty to realizing you’ve been filled up the whole time.
So next time you’re tempted to put in a request for that winning lottery ticket or ask for your boss to suddenly become a spiritual guru, take a breath. Close your eyes. And simply join with God. Who knew prayer could be so… effortless?
