It all starts with a rattle.
You know, one of those plastic noise-makers that makes a baby feel like they’ve invented the wheel. And then it happens: someone takes it away. Panic. Tears. The first possession lost. The first lesson learned: “This is MINE!”
We collect things as if we’d fall apart without them.
First toys, then sneakers, then an iPhone, a car, a house and if things go well: a vacation home in Tuscany, a yacht in Saint-Tropez, and a private island that makes everyone jealous. It seems the more we possess, the more we exist. But… is that really true?
According to A Course in Miracles, possession is an illusion.
In fact, the entire world of form is a projection, a dream in which we believe something can be “ours.” But what is truly ours, Love, Peace, Joy, can’t be boxed, locked away, or insured against fire damage.
The Course is crystal clear:
“Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God.”
Your car is unreal. Your house, too. Even your body is a temporary rental. And yet we spend our days protecting, maintaining, defending, decorating, expanding, or upgrading these temporary forms. We say things like “my garden,” “my couch,” “my husband.”
But if we’re honest… can we ever truly own anything?
The Course invites us to see differently.
Love is the only thing you truly have, especially when you give it away. Possession, on the other hand, creates separation. It says, “This is mine, not yours.” But in Oneness, there is no separation, so possession is…at best…a charming mistake wrapped in glitter.
Children sometimes understand this better than adults. Give a child a toy car, and five minutes later they’ll share it, or throw it in the sandbox because they found something more exciting. We call that immaturity. Maybe it’s deeply spiritual.
You cannot own anything.
Not your stuff. Not your partner. Not your ideas. Not even your identity. Everything flows. Everything comes and goes. What remains is your Essence, that silent Light that pervades all. That Light owns nothing, because it is everything.
Maybe it’s time to redefine what it means to be rich.
Not: “How much do I own?”
But: “How much Love do I allow in my life?”
And if you still want to own something, let it be this thought:
“Giving and receiving are one in truth.”
(Lesson 108, A Course in Miracles)
Because the only real wealth… is knowing you need nothing to be whole.
Ready to let go of everything, including this article?
Let it sink in, smile at your urge to possess, and then gently return your treasures to the flow of Life. Including that rattle.
With love and light,
G.
