Pain doesn’t knock politely, it kicks the door in.
Physical pain, emotional pain, heart pain, soul pain… it all carries the same message: something needs attention.
Pain is not an enemy. It is a signal.
The nervous system waving a little red flag saying: “Attention please, something needs care here.”
And yes, sometimes that “something” is physical: inflammation, injury, disease.
And sometimes it is emotional: heartbreak, rejection, loneliness.
The “why did they do that” pain.
The “why am I always the one” pain.
Different costumes… same mechanism.
And this is where A Course in Miracles shifts the perspective.
ACIM does not deny disease or pain.
It does not say: “It’s all imaginary.”
It simply says: the body is the place where it shows up, not the place where it begins.
And e v e r y t h i n g begins in the mind!
The body is like a loyal employee. It does what it’s told.
And the mind has been telling a very old story:
“I am separate.”
“I am the body.”
“I can be attacked.”
“I can lose.”
“I am vulnerable.”
And the body, being very dedicated, says: Got it. I’ll play that.
So pain, in the ACIM view, is not a punishment.
It is the echo of a mistaken identity.
Ouch…
but also… ohhh ![]()
Because if pain comes from misidentification, then healing does not come from fighting the body… it comes from remembering who you are.
And here is where it gets interesting.
We all take pain very seriously.
We dramatise it, analyse it, Google it, worry about it…
We tell five friends…or the whole world….about it.
And slowly, we build a whole reality around it.
And the Course just says: You are not the character in the story.
You are the dreamer dreaming the character.
That’s it.
No drama. No judgement. No blame.
Just… perspective.
. . . . .
But let’s get something very clear before anyone starts thinking that
ACIM is anti-doctor.
No. ACIM is not anti-doctor.
If you have appendicitis, you go to the hospital.
You do not sit on the couch whispering:
“I am not a body, I am free” while turning green. ![]()
If fear is overwhelming, if anxiety is too much to handle… take the “magic pill.”
You take insulin for diabetes, antibiotics for infection, or pain relief when needed.
That is not lack of faith. That is common sense.
The Course is about cause, not about being a martyr.
You don’t prove spirituality by suffering.
You prove wisdom by being gentle with yourself.
And at the same time…you can invite a deeper look.
Because the real healing is not in the pill, the operation or the therapy.
(They help on the level of form and that is absolutely fine. Very fine.)
The real shift happens when you begin to question the identity that needs protection in the first place.
And that is where pain becomes…useful, because it points. It points to where you still believe you are small or believe you can be hurt.
Where you still forgot who you are.
And then you don’t have to fight, fix or judge it.
You can simply say: “Ah… I see. I believed the story again.”
And gently…choose again.
Then pain can pass through… without becoming a life sentence.
And that is a very different experience.
Because in truth…you are not a body in pain….you are awareness having a moment.
And moments pass.
Always.
With love and light,
G.
