IDENTITY: The Ego’s Costume Party (And How to Leave Early)

You’re a Pisces.
You’re a mother.
You’re Dutch.
You’re tired.
You’re the fun one. The angry one. The spiritual one. The one who always forgets their password.

Or so you think.

Identity.

We’ve all been dressing up in it.
Layer after layer. Hat after hat. Until we forget we were never the hat.

But here’s the kicker from A Course in Miracles:

“I am not a body. I am free. For I am still as God created me.”

Read that again. Slowly.
Not a body. Not a label. Not a role.
Not even the one who “gets it.”

The Ego’s Favorite Game: “Who Am I Today?”

The ego needs identity like a fish needs water, but it prefers the water to be a little… murky.
Because if you forget who you truly are, you’ll reach for anything that tells you who to be.
        –       “I’m a Leo, so I’m dramatic.”
        –       “I’m the black sheep in my family.”
        –       “I’m not a morning person.”
        –       “I’m a lightworker with a karmic debt in my 4th chakra.”

Sounds spiritual, right?
But is it… true?

“The ego is the idea of what you are. It is wrong, but you believe in it.” — ACIM

The ego doesn’t care what identity you pick,  as long as it keeps you busy. Confused. Distracted.
Because if you ever stop, even for a moment, and just are…
the ego starts to lose its grip.

 Identity = Repetition

How does the ego maintain its story?
Simple: through repetition.
        –       You repeat a thought: I’m not good enough.
        –       You hear others say: You’re always so sensitive.
        –       You see your football team lose and feel like a failure, because you’re “part of them.”

Whether it’s astrology, family roles, personality tests, job titles, Enneagram types, or the great “Introvert vs. Extrovert” debate, the world is a festival of forms. And the ego LOVES a form.

But the Cursus says:

“Nothing you see means anything.”
“You are not what you have made.”

Not even if what you made has a cool website and a bestselling personality guide.

Collective Ego: The Identity Club

Sometimes we’re not even aware we’ve joined a group identity:
        –       I’m vegan.
        –       I’m spiritual.
        –       I’m atheist.
        –       I’m left-wing / right-wing.
        –       I’m an Ajax fan.
        –       I’m part of this Telegram group with “truth seekers.”

The ego doesn’t mind which team you pick, as long as you need the team to feel like you belong.

But here’s the thing:

“You belong to God.” Not to a club, not to a concept, not even to your body.

But I Like My Identity…

Of course you do. Some roles are warm and lovely.
You might feel proud of being a teacher. A grandparent. A gardener. A poet.

But the Course reminds us:

“Only the truth is true.”
And truth does not change. Ever.

So… if it can shift, it’s not you.
If it can be threatened, it’s not you.
If it was born and will die,  it’s not you.

You can use a role, but don’t become it.

The Holy Spirit uses every role the ego made.
Not to reinforce illusion, but to undo it.

Who Are You Really?

Not your name.
Not your gender.
Not your past.
Not your trauma.
Not your zodiac sign.
Not your ancestry.
Not even your soul mission on Earth.

You are:
 Pure Light
 An extension of Love
A thought in the Mind of God
 Forever innocent and whole

But that sounds a bit floaty when you’re stuck in traffic, right?

So here’s a practical prayer for when the ego starts labeling again:

“I will not use this image to forget who I am.”
(Even if it’s a really good image with great hair.)

And Now What?

You don’t have to fight your identities.
Just see through them.

Try this:
        –       The next time you say, “I am ____,” pause.
        –       Ask: “Is this eternal? Or just temporary?”
        –       Let yourself smile at the answer.

Final Words

The ego throws a never-ending costume party.
Everyone’s wearing masks, trying to outdo each other with labels.
But you…you’re allowed to leave the party early.

You can take off the mask,
step outside,
breathe the light…
and remember:

You are not a character in the dream. You are the dreamer. And it’s time to wake up.

With love and light,
G.
