The mind loves to complicate things, doesn’t it?
We read: “I can choose to change all thoughts that hurt,” and immediately the ego grabs a notepad and says, “Excellent, let’s make a 10-step plan!”
But the Holy Spirit smiles and whispers, “Beloved, it’s much simpler than that.”
Changing a thought in the sense of A Course in Miracles is not like changing clothes.
It’s not about switching one opinion for another or forcing yourself to think “positive.”
It’s about withdrawing your BELIEF from the thought that causes pain.
The Course says, “I could see peace instead of this.”
That little sentence is the lever that lifts the whole universe.
When you say it with even a sliver of willingness, you open the door for the Holy Spirit …the quiet presence within you that knows Truth… to reinterpret what you thought you saw.
So how do you actually do it?
Let’s make it human and simple.
First of all notice the painful thought…
You feel a tightening in your chest, a familiar sting, or that mental sentence that starts with “They shouldn’t have…” or “I can’t believe I…”
That’s your cue. Don’t fight it…just notice it, as you’d notice a child who’s scared.
Then pause and acknowledge and say to yourself:
“Yes, I see you, painful thought. You’re trying to protect me, but you’re mistaken about what I am.”
That short pause breaks the automatic identification. You’ve already started to shift.
Ask for a new way to see! This is what the Course calls the miracle.
A miracle isn’t fireworks in the sky; it’s a change in perception.
Whisper something like:
“Holy Spirit, help me see this differently.”
And then… do nothing.
Don’t try to imagine what the new perception should be…just rest.
Sometimes within seconds, sometimes later in the day, the tension dissolves. The thought loses its grip.
What remains is a quiet clarity…almost like sunlight after rain.
You didn’t change the world, but you changed your mind about it.
Here’s a little story:
Once I was deeply annoyed at someone who seemed to “use” my kindness.
I kept repeating mental headlines like: “Unfair! Ungrateful! Never again!”
And then the lesson’s voice whispered:
“Would you rather be right, or happy?”
I laughed out loud, because I realized that the whole drama existed only in my head.
I said, “Okay H.Spirit, show me what’s real.”
The next moment, the anger turned into compassion.
Not because they changed, but because I did.
That’s how you change a thought:
not by force, but by choosing to stop believing the ego’s story about it.
You make a small space ….and Love rushes in.
Every time you do this, the mind becomes a little lighter,
a little more transparent to Truth.
And one day you’ll realize:
You’re not changing thoughts anymore, you’re simply resting in
the quiet awareness from which all thoughts arise.
That’s the place where pain can’t enter.
That’s where you and God are one.
With love and light,
G.
