When people hear the word holy, they often think of something elevated, distant and special.
Something that belongs in churches, temples, ancient texts or silent mountain retreats. Something serious, pure and slightly intimidating. Not something you would associate with a kitchen, a family conversation, a supermarket queue or a difficult WhatsApp message.
Holiness, in our imagination, is something rare and exceptional. And that is exactly where things quietly go wrong.
The moment holiness became “special”, it stopped being familiar.
The moment it became “high”, it stopped being close.
The moment it became “spiritual”, it stopped being normal.
And once holiness is somewhere else, it no longer needs to be recognized here.
Very convenient.
If holiness is for special people, you can remain ordinary.
If holiness is rare, you don’t have to look at yourself !
But what if holiness is not an achievement at all, but a condition.
What if it is not something you grow into, but something you already are. What if it is not dramatic, but extremely simple. So simple, in fact, that it is easy to overlook.
Holiness rarely looks impressive.
It looks like listening without correcting…
being kind without making a point..
not reacting when you could…
smiling when you don’t have to…
and choosing silence when silence is kinder.
Not spectacular, not noticeable, not headline material.
And yet… deeply holy.
The ego doesn’t like that. It prefers holiness with fireworks, enlightenment with a backstory, awakening with a process, and transformation with a before-and-after story. That keeps things interesting.
Normal holiness is boring for the ego, because there is no role to play, no identity to build and no story to tell. Just being. Highly inconvenient.
Another misunderstanding is that holiness should feel “holy”.
In reality it feels natural. Simple.
Almost like nothing special is happening. Which is precisely why we miss it.
We wait for spiritual experiences while the sacred is quietly doing the dishes.
We look for depth while holiness is answering a message with kindness.
We search for meaning while the miracle is not rolling our eyes.
Holiness does not announce itself. It does not demand attention.
It is light. It has humor. It is not easily offended. Real holiness is relaxed.
We often think holiness will make us special. In truth, holiness makes us normal again. Normal as in unguarded, open and present, which can feel strangely unfamiliar in a world that is constantly acting.
This is why the ego keeps holiness far away, high up, difficult and complex. So you will keep searching instead of recognizing. So you will keep becoming instead of being.
So you will keep improving instead of relaxing.
When you stop looking for something special, you may suddenly notice that it has been here all along.
With love and light,
G.
