We are warriors, aren’t we? Not with swords or shields, but with opinions, judgments, and grievances. Every morning, many of us rise, coffee in hand, ready to take on “the fight”—with our partners, our neighbors, our governments, and even ourselves. But let’s pause for a moment and ask: What are we really fighting for?
From the perspective of A Course in Miracles (ACIM), the answer is as simple as it is profound: we are not fighting for anything—we are fighting against an illusion. Yes, the whole grand drama of life that feels so real, so urgent, is merely a projection of our own inner conflict. Like a dreamer battling the monsters in their sleep, we wrestle with the shadows of fear, guilt, and separation.
The Battle of the Ego
The ego, that shouting voice in our minds, loves conflict. Why? Because conflict keeps us focused on the illusion. It yells : You must win this argument. You must prove you’re right. You must fix the world to find peace. And we listen, donning our emotional armor, ready to “fix” everyone and everything around us.
But here’s the cosmic joke: the ego doesn’t want peace. It thrives on war—the war of duality, where someone must be wrong for us to be right, someone must lose for us to gain. It’s exhausting, isn’t it?
A Gentle Reminder: We Are Light
ACIM reminds us of something so gentle, so comforting, that it feels like a warm embrace: We are light. Not warriors, not victims, not the sum of our grievances. We are the divine light, already whole, already at peace. The battles we fight in the world are nothing more than reflections of a battle within—a battle between remembering our true nature and forgetting it.
So, what if we laid down our swords? What if we stopped fighting the illusion and simply laughed at it? Yes, laughed. Imagine watching a movie where the hero spends two hours fighting…a shadow. Wouldn’t you chuckle and think, That’s a bit silly, isn’t it?
A Moment of Humor: The Daily Struggle
Picture this: You’re in the kitchen, and your partner forgets to put the lid on the blender. Smoothie flies everywhere. The ego pounces: Why do they never listen?! But pause. Is this a battle worth fighting? Or is it a chance to smile, maybe even laugh, and remember that the mess (both literal and metaphorical) is just part of the illusion?
The same applies to larger conflicts. Whether it’s political, societal, or global, every “battle” invites us to see beyond appearances and recognize the divine light in everyone involved—even the ones we think are “wrong.”
The Only True Resolution
ACIM teaches that there’s only one way to end the battle: forgiveness. Not the kind of forgiveness where you declare, Fine, I’ll let it go, but I’m still right. True forgiveness is the recognition that there was never anything to forgive in the first place. The battle was a dream, a projection of fear. And when we see this, the war ends—not just for us, but for the world we thought we were fighting.
A Call to Peace
So today, let’s make a different choice. Instead of suiting up for another round of “Who’s Right?” let’s remember who we really are: the light of the world. And let’s offer that light to everyone we meet—not as warriors, but as bringers of peace.
Because in the end, there’s no battle to fight, no enemy to defeat. There’s only love, waiting patiently for us to lay down our arms and return to its gentle embrace.
As ACIM says:
“Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God.”
And isn’t that so much easier than fighting?
