Let’s be honest, who hasn’t, at some point, tried to fix life with an idol? No need to picture ancient statues or golden calves. Idols today wear modern disguises: success, approval, wellness routines, bank balances, or even spiritual achievements…
Today’s lesson from A Course in Miracles gently, yet powerfully, says:
“Let not the carved images you made to be the Son of God instead of what he is be worshipped today.”
Pffffff ….There goes our favorite spiritual safety blanket !
So what exactly is an idol?
An idol, as the Course defines it, is anything we substitute for our true Self.
It’s the placeholder we use when we forget we are whole, eternal, and loved beyond measure.
It’s the ‘Plan B’ the ego invented in case Love didn’t work out.
But Love always works out. That’s the thing.
Idols might catch your eye, reflect some light, look magical, but try to hold them, and pop! There goes the magic. They never last because they’re not based on truth.
Today’s lesson reminds us:
“If you remain as God created you, appearances cannot replace the truth…”
You see, nothing external can become you. Not your age, not your résumé, not your story, not your bank account, not even your anxiety.
Everything you thought you had to earn, achieve or fix, you already are.
Why do we still love our idols then?
Because they seem to offer quick relief in a confusing world.
They promise peace, validation, certainty, in bite-size, dopamine-coated portions. But they’re always bargaining chips: “If I have this, then I’ll be happy.”
The truth? You were created happy.
And that can’t be improved by a newer phone or a nice car. .
The lesson invites us to pause and look within:
“Seek within your mind the Self that is the holy Son of God.”
Let’s call it the Light within, or your divine Self, or Christ, that quiet, loving presence that hasn’t gone anywhere, even when you were busy idol-hopping.
This Light doesn’t demand worship. It just is. And when you remember it, you gently realize how silly your idols were and how little they truly gave you.
No more clinging to ego-made promises. Just hands, hearts, and minds open to Love.
When you meet anyone today, silently remind yourself:
“They too are as Love created them. Whole, bright, complete.”
And if an old idol comes knocking (perfectionism, fear, worry, shiny Instagram comparison…), smile and say:
“Oh, you again. But I know who I am. I am as Love created me.”
And in that moment the illusion dissolves.
With love and light,
G.
